Introducing Slovenia

The next European destination to be pinned to the growing Llama Travel map is Slovenia. From the soaring peaks of the Julian Alps to the short but sweet Adriatic coast; the cobbled old town streets of Ljubljana to the sparkling turquoise lakes of Bled and Bohinj, the bite-sized country of Slovenia packs a huge punch. It is the green heart of Europe, with more than half of its total area covered in forest.

Here’s what Otto, a member of the Llama Travel sales team, saw during his time in Slovenia - all the photos in this blog are his own.

My tour of Slovenia began in the heart of the Julian Alps. Only a 40-minute drive from Ljubljana Airport is the Lake District of Slovenia. Arguably the most iconic image of Slovenia is Lake Bled, with its island church, medieval clifftop castle and mountainous backdrop. Another must visit lake is Lake Bohinj. Although Bled is more famous, the quieter Bohinj is the largest natural lake in Slovenia with equally breathtaking views. Leaving behind the lakes, I visited Predjama Castle, a medieval castle built into a cliff cave that has been standing for more than 800 years. Closeby is Postojna Cave, a cave system of caverns, halls and passages some 24km long and two million years old. Continue on to the Adriatic coast to the resort town of Portorož and the Venetian coastal town of Piran. I ended my tour in Ljubljana. Slovenia’s calm capital is one of Europe’s greenest cities with the historic city centre having been fully pedestrianised.
