Ben, one of our Travel Consultants, recently returned from an incredible journey through India, bringing back plenty of travel tips and inspiration. If you're thinking about visiting this incredible destination, here are Ben’s insights in response to some of our most frequently asked questions, helping you make the most of your holiday.

India truly is a country like no other. What struck me most about this country was the sheer variety. Each destination felt entirely different from the last, offering its own unique blend of history, culture and energy. From the majestic Mughal architecture of Agra to the tranquil foothills of Shimla, every stop had something new to discover. My personal favourites? Seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise, spotting tigers in Ranthambore, and, of course, indulging in some of the best curries and chai teas I’ve ever tasted.

Where was the best place you stayed?

The hotels in Shimla were my favourites. Both the Radisson Jass and the Oberoi Cecil offer stunning views over the Himalayan Foothills, making for an unforgettable stay. Waking up to those panoramic vistas was truly special.

What was your favourite destination?

It’s hard to choose because everywhere is so different, but if I had to pick, I’d say Agra. It’s packed with history and culture, and, of course, it’s the gateway to the Taj Mahal. I also visited Goa (coming soon to Llama Travel!), which was a completely different experience offering stunning beaches, laid-back vibes, and some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen.

What’s the best local drink to try?

India is world-famous for its tea culture, and it didn’t disappoint me at all. Whether it’s black tea, green tea or the spiced flavours of masala chai, there’s a huge variety to try. As an avid tea lover and drinker, I made sure to have a cup at every opportunity!

What was the highlight of your trip?

It has to be the Taj Mahal, it really is every bit as awe-inspiring as people say it is. Arriving at sunrise meant we had the perfect light for photos and could enjoy the monument without the crowds. Another highlight was spotting tigers and sloth bears in Ranthambore. Not everyone was able to spot them, so I’d recommend booking two game drives as it really maximised my chances of seeing them, and I’m so glad I did!

How were the guides?

Every guide I met was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about sharing their country’s history and culture. Our main guide, Gagan, was one of the best I’ve ever had. His insights into Indian traditions and daily life made the trip even more immersive.

How was the food?

The food in India is incredible. The curries are so much more flavoursome than anything I’ve had in the UK, and there’s an amazing variety of dishes that you simply wouldn’t find at home. If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend trying gulab jamun. This is a delicious, syrupy dessert that’s perfect after a spicy meal.

Who would you recommend this trip to?

India is a destination for travellers who want to immerse themselves in a completely different culture fully. Whether you're into history, food, wildlife or landscapes, there’s something for everyone.

 Did you bring back any souvenirs?

Plenty! I couldn’t resist bringing back tea (lots of it, as you can imagine). There are so many amazing craft stalls where you can pick up unique gifts from local artisans. I also stocked up on curry powders and spices, which means that, hopefully, my cooking will now be a little more authentic and tasty.

Where’s next on your travel list?

This trip has definitely made me want to explore more of South Asia. I’m hoping to visit Sri Lanka next; it’s been on my bucket list for a while.

When will Goa be added to Llama Travel’s itineraries?

We’re excited to be adding Goa as an extension to our India holidays from 2026! I absolutely loved my time there. As I mentioned previously, the sunsets were some of the best I’ve ever seen, and it was the perfect place to relax for a few days at the end of a trip.
