7 Reasons to Fall in Love with Peru
Latin America is a special part of the world, and each country offers its own gems. As the original Llama Travel destination though, Peru will always hold a special place in our hearts. Furthermore, as one of our most popular destinations, it is clear that our high opinion of Peru is widely shared. If you are wondering what all the fuss is about, read on for the reasons everybody loves Peru.
1. Ecological Diversity
Admittedly Peru is a big country, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that you can experience high altitude mountain settings, desert beaches, lush Amazonian rainforest and big city life all within a 3 week visit to the country. In fact, Peru is so diverse that it boasts 84 of the planet’s 103 ecosystem types, and has 28 climates of the 32 varieties in existence.
2. Ceviche
Lima is well-established as a culinary hub, with not one but three of its eating establishments making it onto The World’s 50 Best... list for restaurants. While Lima is a foodie hub, all over Peru you’ll find surprisingly delicious meals. Ceviche, a dish of raw fish and/or seafood marinated in citrus juice is one of the best-loved culinary discoveries, although by no means the only one that awaits you in Peru.
3. Machu Picchu & Rich Ancient History
The icon of Peru, the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu are a wonder to behold, and prove even better in real life. Peru is home to numerous other ruins too - Sacsayhuaman, Chan Chan & Sipan, and Huacapucllana, to name a few - each providing a fascinating glimpse into the ancient civilisations which inhabited the area.
4. Architecture
The Spanish really left their mark on Peru, in more ways than one. One of the more positive remnants of Spanish rule is the beautiful colonial architecture to be found in many of Peru’s cities. Large plazas surrounded by grand cathedrals and government buildings are a frequent sight, and make for great photo opportunities.
5. Wildlife
Thanks to the country’s geographical diversity, a wide variety of wildlife species are supported in various parts of Peru, from the whales and dolphins just off the Pacific Coast, and the condors which soar above the Colca Canyon, to the caymans which lurk in the Amazon river to the monkeys and birds which inhabit its trees. Visiting Peru promises a wildlife spectacular.
6. The colours
Peru is a colourful country, both in terms of landscape and in terms of culture. The Nazca Desert pops with red sand, while the Sacred Valley is so green it seems like a painting. The colourful weaved fabric worn by the locals goes well with the warm smiles you’ll find across the country, and the numerous festivals and celebrations give visitors many happy memories to take home.
7. Llamas
Some of the strangest looking animals you are likely to encounter, llamas show up all over Peru, and between their oddly proportioned bodies and prominent teeth, it’s hard not to find a little soft spot for these guys.
