5 Reasons To Visit Mexico

1. Food

Food. Now, it’s fair to say that the popularity of Mexico cuisine is a hit with people all over the world so just imagine being surrounded by the smells, tastes and colours on a daily basis – it never fails to disappoint. Tacos al pastor quickly became a favourite of mine, soft corn tortillas stuffed with pulled pork strips with diced onions, coriander and small pineapple chunks for a sweet touch. Another dish which can help start the day right, is Huevos Rancheros, fried eggs served on a flour tortilla covered in pico de gallo, slices of avocado, refried beans and a generous amount of hot sauce if you’re feeling brave. When exploring the Yucatan peninsula, be sure to tuck into Pollo Pibil, which translates to underground cooked chicken, offering deep flavours and a hearty meal for dinner. Of course all of the dishes can be accompanied by a traditional Margarita cocktail, renowned for its freshness and sour tones. The vast array of incredible flavours and meals this country has to offer is overwhelming at times but an enjoyable task to face. 2. Mexico City

We begin our Mexico holidays in the true hub of the country, the capital, Mexico City. Home to over 20 million people in its metropolitan area, La Ciudad de Mexico is a bustling urban community that rest on an ancient lake bed, formerly known as Lago Texcoco. Our hotels are centrally based allowing for you to explore the city at your own leisure or even take our optional excursions with our knowledgeable guides. Must-see sights include the verdant and spacious Chapultepec Park, where you can climb to the top to visit the Castle, which is home to the National Museum of History. If you’re looking for great views of the city, then be sure to take the elevator to the top of the Torre Latinoamericana. If you time it right you can take in the sun setting behind the surrounding mountain ranges as well as the striking domed rooftop of the Museo de Bellas Artes. Our most popular optional excursion includes a full-day visit to the Pyramids of Teotihuacán. Located about an hour outside of the city centre, this remarkable ceremonial and archaeological site where you can walk down the Avenue of the Dead and ascend the imposing Pyramid of the Moon. Another incredibly unique part of the city is the southern neighbourhood of Xoximilco, which unveils a transport network of canals constructed by the Aztecs. Often compared to Venice, you can ride gondola-like boats smothered in colours whilst taking in the local way of life in this quirky district. I would also recommend paying a visit to the Museo Soumaya, in the Polanco suburb, which is not only home to one of the most complete collections of art but the building itself is equally impressive.

3. Beaches

Mexico is undoubtedly home to some of the most pristine and golden beaches in the world. The western coastline offers many locations where you can put your feet up, relax and take in the fresh ocean air. Our Passage Through Mexico holiday ends with one night in Cancun, however your time here can be extended or altered to stay in Playa del Carmen which offers a less touristic end on the Riviera Maya coast with unparalleled beaches on your doorstep. There are plenty of other opportunities to take day trips to other nearby locations. You can take a ferry over to Isla Mujeres, spend a full day at the former Mayan Port City of Tulum, which boasts archaeological structures and a stunning beach on the shores or simply enjoy the white beaches of Playa del Carmen, just a stones throwaway from our Mahekal Resort Hotel which offers a half board stay before heading back to the UK.

4. Archaeological History

Steeped in centuries of history rich in culture and tradition, the archaeological sites that remain make this country truly fascinating to explore and see how their communities once functioned. As previously mentioned, the Pyramids of Teotihuacán offer an impressive insight whilst there are plenty of other sites dotted around the country that are visited during our comprehensive itinerary around Mexico. The ruins of Palenque are surrounded by jungle flora with the central buildings remained untouched centuries after completion. Temples and tombs emerge out of the greenery with a range of bird species and howler monkeys often making themselves known. After spending 2 nights in Mérida, you head further inland to explore the Mayan ruins complex of Chichen Itza, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
