Samarkand is the jewel of Uzbekistan and one of the most legendary cities of the Silk Road. With a history spanning over 2,500 years, this ancient metropolis has been a crossroads of cultures, a seat of empire, and a centre of art and science. Today, its breathtaking architecture and storied past make it a must-visit destination.
The heart of Samarkand is the magnificent Registan Square, framed by three grand madrasahs adorned with intricate mosaics and blue domes. At sunset, the square glows with a golden light, creating an unforgettable scene. Nearby, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis is known for its tilework, with mausoleums shimmering in shades of turquoise, azure, and lapis lazuli.
Samarkand was also home to Timur (Tamberlane), the famed conqueror who made the city the capital of his empire in the 14th century. His influence is seen in the Gur-e-Amir, his beautifully decorated mausoleum, and the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, which was once one of the largest mosques in the world.
Beyond its historic splendour, Samarkand is alive with modern Uzbek culture. The bustling Siab Bazaar is the perfect place to experience local life, from the aroma of freshly baked non bread to the vibrant displays of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
