Jerash

A short distance to the north of Amman lies one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the eastern Mediterranean region. As one of the ten cities of the Greek Decapolis, Jerash is plush with monumental and sophisticated architecture constructed throughout the huge site. Key must-see sites include the Oval Plaza complete with a temple and theatre with the pillar lined causeway, ‘the Cardo’, leading to its entrance, the Temple of Artemis with its imposing entrance, the impressively complete North Theatre and the Byzantine-era Christian church with a largely intact tiled floor. A day can easily be spent exploring the city and feeding on the history.
