Tiwanaku

   More photos

Tiwanaku is an archaeological site dating back to 1500BC. Named after the civilisation who were responsible for building it, it is a testament to the Tiwanaku Empire, the first great civilisation in South America. While the Tiwanaku people had no writing system, it is thought that the Tiwanaku influence was felt across the southern Andes, in places as far as Peru, Chile and Argentina.

Today the Unesco World Heritage site is thought to be a city covering a large area, however, only a small portion of it has been excavated. It comprises a number of sacred structures, in the form of courtyards, temples, and pieces of art. Stone monoliths planted firmly in the centre of temples, and intricately carved objects decorate the complex walls, making this a fascinating piece of indigenous history.
