The Mekong Delta is the final stretch of the Mekong River as it finishes its journey from the mountains of Tibet and finally reaches the sea, having passed through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia along the way. The river and its distributaries play a core role in the lives of the people who live on it, travel on it and irrigate their fields with its waters. There are few experiences that compare to floating through the delta’s narrow backwaters under a canopy of rustling palm fronds.
The capital of the Mekong Delta is Can Tho, which is also the sixth-largest city in Vietnam. To get a real feel for life on the delta, it’s best to avoid the busy capital and head into the countryside. The sleepy province of Ben Tre sits on the Ham Luong River, in a quieter section of the delta where life is more agricultural than metropolitan. Here you can experience the traditional crafts and customs of the locals, and enjoy the tropical scenery of Vietnam’s river wetlands.
