Negombo

   More photos

Just one hour north of Colombo, the once sleepy fishing town of Negombo is now a popular starting point for tourists arriving in Sri Lanka. Given its sunny palm-fringed beaches, good hotels and proximity to the airport, it’s not hard to see why. Like many parts of the Island, Negombo is a melting pot of cultures and religions. The town has a majority Catholic population and has been dubbed ‘little Rome’ due to its many churches. Today, the town is a well-established tourist destination with plenty of restaurants and bars to sate your appetite after a long flight.
