Jaipur

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, and its most populous city. It has the nickname “the pink city” for its pink stuccoed houses, coloured to imitate the distinctive sandstone favoured by Mughal royals. The city’s street fronts were first painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876, and are now recognised by UNESCO as a heritage site.

The highlights of Jaipur are its extravagant palaces. Within the city there is the Hawa Mahal, known as “the Palace of Winds” for its intricate pattern of latticework windows; and also the city palace, current residence of the Jaipur royal family. However the most impressive palace lies just outside the city – the Amber Fort. The Amber Fort is an extensive complex of stunning courtyards, elaborate halls and intricately decorated corridors.
