As well as being one of the best safari destinations in the world, Kenya has a beautiful stretch of coastline, lapped by the Indian Ocean. The coastline has a selection of palm-fringed beaches and colourful coral reefs where you can get close to the richly diverse marine life of the southern Kenyan coast, including turtles, mantas and barracudas. The coast and nearby islands also hold historical interest, scattered with the ruins of forts, mosques and tombs, plus underwater shipwrecks which can be explored by scuba divers.
South of Mombasa, the Kenyan coast stretches for 100 kilometres to the Tanzanian border, backed by palms and boasting just one major area of hotels: Diani Beach. Situated 30 kilometres south of Mombasa, Diani is regarded as Kenya’s most popular beach, renowned for its turquoise waters and palm-fringed white sands. The beach provides the perfect extension to a safari holiday in Kenya, reached via a one-hour flight from Nairobi or direct from the Masai Mara. Activities on offer at Diani Beach include windsurfing, diving, fishing, cycling, snorkelling and scuba diving. There is a range of hotels, shops and facilities dotted around Diani Beach.
